About the state

A young state, an ancient land

Telangana is the 29th and youngest state of India, formed on 2 June 2014 after a fifty-year-long political movement seeking separate statehood. The state was carved out of north-western Andhra Pradesh and is bordered by Maharashtra in the north, Chhattisgarh in the north-east, Karnataka in the west, and Andhra Pradesh in the east and south.

The land is part of the Deccan Plateau — semi-arid, rocky, and stitched together by an extraordinary irrigation system of 46,000 traditional tanks, called cheruvulu, dating to the Kakatiya dynasty (12th–14th centuries). The Krishna and Godavari rivers shape the southern and northern borders. The Telangana sun is famously fierce, the soils famously stubborn, and the rice and cotton famously good.

Of Telangana's 3.5 crore people, roughly 60% live in 10,434 villages across 596 mandals and 33 districts. Telugu is spoken by ~76% of the population; Urdu is the second official language, especially around the old city of Hyderabad. The state is home to thirty-two ST and sixty-six SC communities, with Lambadi, Koya, and Gond among the most populous tribal groups.
