About the mandal

Choppadandi — where the Manair widens

Choppadandi is a mandal in the western part of Karimnagar district, sitting on the south bank of the Manair River just before it widens into the Lower Manair Dam reservoir. The mandal headquarters town shares the same name and lies along State Highway 1 (Karimnagar–Sircilla), about 28 km west of Karimnagar town.

Of the mandal's eighteen revenue villages, fourteen are agrarian, growing primarily paddy and cotton with the dam waters and tube-well irrigation; the remaining four — closer to the dam — supplement farming with inland fishing on lease from the AP Fisheries department. Jaggery (bellam) is a traditional cottage industry, particularly around Kothapalli village.

The mandal lost twelve people to the 2016 Manair flood; since then, sixteen villages have built raised cyclone shelters under the SDRF programme. Two of these — Kothapalli and Veenavanka — are now used year-round as community centres, with VoV-installed Wi-Fi and telemedicine kiosks.
