About VoiceOfVillage
A directory, community, and marketplace for every one of India's 6.79 lakh revenue villages — free for villagers, forever.
Our mission
Every one of India's 6,79,276 revenue villages deserves a permanent, accurate, publicly-verifiable home on the internet — one that is written and edited by the people who actually live there, not by an outside agency, and not behind a login wall. That home should be discoverable through search, readable on a low-end smartphone over a 3G connection, and preserved for decades regardless of which company owns the domain.
VoiceOfVillage exists to build that home. We are a directory of the country's 36 states, 785 districts, 7,151 mandals, and 6,79,276 villages — but the useful stuff is the layer on top: local jobs, local businesses, local news, sarpanch verification, scheme access, and a Grama Sabha discussion feed rooted to each village's revenue-village boundary.

We are a small, independent team. We are not owned by, funded by, or affiliated with any political party, state or central government body, or foreign investor. We have taken no funding round that would obligate us to sell user data or run deceptive advertising.
How we're funded
The core village directory, search, and Grama Sabha are free — for villagers, for local businesses posting jobs, and for readers. We keep the lights on with:
- Contextual advertising served through Google AdSense. Ads are labelled "Advertisement" and never appear inside verified sarpanch content, government-scheme instructions, election-day information, or on low-quality skeleton pages. See our Cookie Policy for what data ad serving involves.
- Optional premium listings for businesses that want featured placement in local search results.
- Voluntary donations from readers who value the work.
We do not sell personal data to data brokers. We do not run pop-ups, interstitials, autoplaying video ads, or any of the ad formats Google's Better Ads Standards prohibit.
Editorial standards
Everything on VoiceOfVillage falls into one of three buckets, and each has a different provenance signal on the page:
- Government / open-data facts (village names, census populations, geographic boundaries, list of schemes, election results, official sarpanch identities). Sourced from named, dated, government registers listed below. Marked with the source and its publication date on every page.
- Community contributions (photos, business listings, event announcements, Grama Sabha posts). Attributed to the contributor, timestamped, and — for verified sarpanch or panchayat secretary accounts — marked with a verification badge.
- Editorial pieces (news write-ups on a scheme launch, an election result, a village profile). Bylined by a real, named editor. Corrections issued publicly on the same URL, dated.
Where our data comes from
| Dataset | Source | Licence |
|---|---|---|
| Village names, LGD codes, hierarchy | Local Government Directory (Ministry of Panchayati Raj), 2024 snapshot | Open Government Data |
| Village populations, demographics | Census of India, 2011 | Public domain (Government of India) |
| Health, nutrition, and social indicators | National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5), 2019–21 | Public data (IIPS / MoHFW) |
| Geographic boundaries, POIs, road network | OpenStreetMap contributors | Open Database Licence (ODbL) 1.0 |
| Constituency (LS, Assembly) mappings | Election Commission of India | Public data |
We publish a machine-readable sitemap of every canonical URL and, over time, will open more of our derived datasets under a share-alike licence.
