Bastar keeps what is reckoned among the longest festivals in the world, roughly seventy-five days, traced to the reign of Purushottam Dev in the thirteenth century. It does not mark Rama's victory over Ravana at all: it honours Danteshwari, the presiding goddess of the region, and is led by the tribal communities of the Bastar division, who bring their own deities to Jagdalpur for it.
