Ganeshotsav

Shingave observes Ganeshotsav on Monday, 14 September 2026, along with the rest of Maharashtra.

14 Sept

Ganeshotsav in Maharashtra

Called Ganeshotsav and kept for ten days. Modak is the offering, sarvajanik mandals organise the public pandals, and the main immersion is on Anant Chaturdashi.

The regional form observed across Maharashtra. How any one household or village keeps it varies, and is not something recorded here.

The five Manache Ganpati

Pune's procession order is fixed by tradition: Kasba Ganpati leads as the gram-daivat of the city, followed by Tambdi Jogeshwari, Guruji Talim, Tulshibaug and Kesariwada. Tilak began the public festival here in 1893, and the Manache Ganpati still set the sequence every Anant Chaturdashi.

When the idol is immersed

The idol is kept for one and a half, three, five, seven days or until Anant Chaturdashi — it is a family custom rather than a rule, and community mandapams usually keep it longest.

Use the designated immersion point

Many gram panchayats and municipalities set aside a pond or a marked stretch of tank for immersion. Ask at the panchayat office — it changes year to year, and a drinking-water tank or a farm pond is not an alternative.

Unpainted clay dissolves, plaster of Paris does not

A clay idol breaks down in water within hours. Plaster of Paris does not, and the paints carry heavy metals, so idols accumulate in tanks and rivers after immersion. Pollution control boards in most states now ask for clay for exactly this reason.

Someone should be watching the water, not the idol

Immersion points get crowded and the bank is slippery after the monsoon. Children go into the water at these gatherings every year. Keep one person watching the water rather than the procession.

Take the accessories home

Thermocol, plastic sheeting, cloth and metal ornaments do not belong in the tank even when the idol itself is clay. Most organised immersion points now have a collection bin at the bank for them.
